Which niche should you pick?
Niche choice is the single biggest rate driver โ bigger than years of experience or portfolio quality. Pick the row that matches your background and target.
- You have a tech career background (engineering, product, design)B2B SaaS or AI/ML$0.75โ$1.75/word. Your existing technical fluency is the credibility shortcut editors are paying for.
- You have a finance, banking, or accounting backgroundFintech or regulated finance$0.65โ$1.40/word. Compliance complexity creates a moat that AI can't fake.
- You're a nurse, doctor, or worked in healthcare opsHealthcare$0.50โ$1.00/word. Editors heavily prefer credentialed writers; your background opens doors.
- You have no specialist background but want to start nowPersonal finance or B2B marketing$0.20โ$0.85/word. Large client pool, lower barrier to entry, room to grow.

AI / ML
Editors at outlets like The Information, Stratechery, and corporate blogs at OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face pay $0.85โ$1.75/word for original reporting that includes interviews with researchers, primary-source paper analysis, or hands-on technical demos. The ceiling is high because the supply of writers who can hold a technical conversation with an ML researcher is small.
Best for: ex-engineers, researchers, technical PMs.
B2B SaaS
Marketing teams at Series BโD SaaS companies (~$10Mโ$100M ARR) are the biggest spenders here. They commission long-form pillar content, customer-story features, and thought-leadership pieces meant to drive inbound leads. Per-word rates run $0.75โ$1.50; project rates for full pillar pieces (3,000+ words plus interviews) can hit $4,000โ$6,000.
Best for:ex-product, ex-marketing, anyone who's lived inside a SaaS company.
Fintech
Two distinct buyer types: (1) consumer-finance brands (banks, neobanks, robo-advisors) commissioning explainer content for their blogs, and (2) B2B fintech (payments rails, infrastructure providers) commissioning case studies and developer-marketing content. The B2B side pays roughly 30% more than the consumer side. Compliance complexity (FINRA, SEC, state lending laws) creates the moat.
Best for: ex-banking, ex-finance, anyone with a Series 7 or related credential.
B2B cybersecurity
Vendors in EDR, identity, and cloud security commission technical content meant to be read by CISOs and security engineers. Rates ran $0.60โ$1.20/word in our survey. The category is growing as more security companies build content marketing teams.
Best for: ex-security engineers, ex-IT, anyone with hands-on incident response experience.

Methodology
We surveyed 47 working freelance writers across 12 niches in April 2026 via a Typeform link distributed in three private freelancer communities (Superpath, Peak Freelance, and a private finance-niche Slack). Respondents reported their typical per-word rate, typical project rate, years of experience, and primary client base. We cross-referenced the medians against publicly disclosed rate cards from outlets like The Atlantic, Wired, MIT Technology Review, and agency rate cards published in Editorial Freelancers Association's 2026 update.
Rate ranges in the comparison table represent the 25thโ75th percentile of mid-career (3โ5 years experience) responses in each niche. Outlier responses (top 5% / bottom 5%) were excluded.
